UC Irvine has opened its new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, introducing a novel approach to research. Colleges traditionally organize buildings by discipline, while UCI is bringing disciplines together to address grand challenges, such as those involving health, energy and the environment. Researchers from nearly every UCI school will collaborate in the new six-story edifice, which was 3½ years in the making.
“Our long-held desire to get the best minds together to solve problems and make discoveries has come to a whole new level of fruition with the opening of the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building – one of the largest such structures constructed at any university this century,” Chancellor Howard Gillman says.
The building’s initial occupants will come from the School of Physical Sciences, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences.
