The Irvine City Council has approved the purchase of a 7.3-acre site to build a state-of-the-art indoor gymnasium. The $97.9 million project will be Irvine’s first city-run indoor gym, addressing the growing demand for indoor sports facilities. The 110,000-square-foot facility, at 17300 Red Hill Ave., will host sports organizations, tournaments and city programming and is expected to open late next year.

One proposal includes up to 18 badminton courts and 10 multiuse courts for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and other activities, as well as a multipurpose room and food court. The property also will have 369 parking spaces. “There’s a ton of flexibility as to how this gym facility can be designed,” said Assistant City Manager Pete Carmichael.
