Northwood girls flag football captures title
In a sport still so new, the girls from Northwood High rallied around an unlikely source: experience.
Led largely by a group of upperclassmen, the Timberwolves capped the school’s second year of flag football by winning the inaugural Division 2 championship. While also crediting his assistants, coach Harry Lee says the key for Northwood was its seniors.
“They set a culture for us about coming out to the practices and the games locked in and ready to go,” Lee says. “They were a huge factor in our success these past two years. I can’t say enough about them.”
With most of the roster back in 2024, Northwood finished with a nine-game winning streak.
Because flag football remains so new, there is not yet a state championship, meaning the Timberwolves were unable to advance any further. But they maximized their season by excelling to the finish and making as much history as there was to make.
“They were all so encouraging to one another,” Lee says. “They always cheer for each other and want what’s best for the team.” – Jeff Miller
Beckman boys cross-country wins state
It was a memorable season for Beckman’s boys cross-country team, which captured its first CIF title as well as the first state title for the school in any sport.
“It’s been an amazing year,” coach Corey Schuld says. “I’m definitely super proud of the kids; they’ve worked really hard. They’ve put in a lot of work since June, and they’ve been really meticulous about being consistent and working together and striving for team goals.”
It was a big jump for the program, which was fifth in the CIF finals last year.
“The kids did an amazing job winning the state championship,” Schuld says. “There is no real magic, just a lot of hard work and a lot of consistency and a lot of sacrifice on their side. All in all, it was a team effort. It’s nice to have that depth on a team where teammates know they can rely on each other.” – Tim Burt
